The thin and lightweight performance machine maintains its position as the benchmark for repairable and upgradable laptops.

For 2023, the premium Framework Laptop 13, known for its repairable and upgradable nature, has undergone significant improvements, enhancing its overall performance. It incorporates numerous small changes that maintain compatibility with previous models, elevating an already impressive laptop to new heights.

The original Framework Laptop made waves last year by introducing a laptop that could be disassembled and upgraded, along with a modular array of ports. Importantly, the company fulfilled its commitment to providing parts and upgrades for existing machines. Initially, they offered 12th-gen Intel chips and now introduce new 13th-gen Intel processors, with the option of AMD Ryzen 7040 series chips expected later this year.

For those who haven’t already acquired a Framework Laptop 13, the improved components are now integrated into new pre-built options. These options come with Windows 11 pre-installed and are available starting at £1,049 ($1,049).

In terms of physical appearance, there have been minimal changes to ensure compatibility with older models. The laptop retains its slim, lightweight design, constructed from recycled aluminum, resulting in a premium look and feel.

The screen remains unchanged, featuring a crisp and vibrant display, but now comes with a matte coating instead of a glossy one. This modification significantly reduces glare and reflections. Additionally, the screen hinges have been enhanced, offering a sturdier feel and allowing the laptop to open fully to 180 degrees, which is convenient for using it in a stand position.

The laptop now features upgraded stereo speakers that are louder, although they still lack the richness of the top-tier speakers. Nevertheless, they are suitable for activities like watching YouTube videos or attending meetings. Positioned at the top of the screen is a quality 1080p webcam, accompanied by a physical switch for added privacy. Furthermore, if you prefer a different color scheme, the black screen bezel can be easily swapped for various color options.

PORT AND POWER

The concept of modular ports on the Laptop 13 remains highly commendable. Users have the flexibility to choose from a range of options, including USB-4/Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, microSD, and expandable storage drives. These ports can be easily swapped as per individual requirements. With most of them priced at less than £20 each, it is affordable to have a collection for various tasks.

In terms of performance, the 13th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, tested in the “performance” version of the laptop featuring 16GB of RAM, showed overall improvement compared to the 11th-gen chips tested last year.

In terms of general computing tasks, the Laptop 13 proved to be sufficiently fast, matching the power of its competitors. While it may not handle high-end gaming, it performed well with games like Command & Conquer Remastered and other older or lighter titles.

One notable improvement was its temperature management, as the laptop ran significantly cooler than its previous version. The fans remained mostly silent during browsing and general computing activities, which was highly appreciated.

Furthermore, Framework introduced a higher-capacity battery that stores 11% more energy within the same physical size. This upgraded battery is included in all models except for the most affordable option. While it may not excel in terms of longevity, the laptop delivered a solid eight to nine hours of productivity work with applications such as Chrome, Windows Mail, Evernote, and other lightweight apps. This represents an improvement of at least one hour compared to the previous version.

SUSTAINABILITY

Framework guarantees that the battery will retain a minimum of 80% of its original capacity for at least 1,000 full charge cycles. Additionally, the battery, along with other components such as the RAM and SSD, can be easily replaced. The first-generation laptop received a perfect 10 out of 10 rating for repairability, and the 2023 model has received accolades from experts at iFixit for its user-friendly upgradability.

Framework provides replacement parts and upgrades through its marketplace, while also being compatible with third-party components. Moreover, the laptop incorporates recycled aluminum and plastic in the majority of its components, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
