While the upcoming OnePlus flagship might not bring a significant aesthetic revelation, it could potentially captivate mobile photography enthusiasts.
The OnePlus 12 unmistakably inherits the design elements of its predecessor, the OnePlus 11, with slight modifications. The distinctive sandstone black finish on the rear, a metallic frame along the edges, and a curved display are all retained. Notably, the selfie camera has been relocated from the left corner to a centrally aligned position on the OnePlus 12.
The distinctive half-wrap-around camera island remains a defining feature, although the arrangement of lenses in the accompanying ring has been slightly altered. This adjustment is not purely cosmetic, as it appears to have functional implications. Positioned at the top are two 50-megapixel cameras for standard and wide-angle photography. However, the lower lens features a rectangular cutout, indicating the presence of a periscope-style telephoto camera that likely offers a significantly enhanced optical zoom range—potentially surpassing the 2x optical zoom capability of the OnePlus 11.
The capabilities of this camera system have already been showcased impressively on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and may potentially be introduced to iPhones in the near future. As for the OnePlus 12, speculations indicate that the telephoto zoom camera with a folded lens configuration might incorporate a 64MP sensor.
The remaining internal components follow the standard configuration of a high-end Android phone. According to reports, the OnePlus 12 will be powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, while a reasonably large 5,000mAh battery is expected to provide ample power.
An intriguing aspect mentioned in the report is the potential inclusion of support for 150W wired charging on the device. It is advised to approach this information with caution, but it is worth noting that Chinese smartphone manufacturers have already demonstrated charging technologies as fast as 200W, leaving a slight possibility for such capabilities in the OnePlus 12.
In comparison, the maximum wired charging capability of the OnePlus 11 was 100W (80W in the U.S.). As for wireless charging, the OnePlus 12 is expected to offer a 50W output, surpassing the wired charging speeds of flagship devices from Samsung, Apple, and Google.
Regarding a potential release date, the OnePlus 12 is still a few months away. The OnePlus 11 was launched in February 2023, and since there are no indications of a OnePlus 11 Pro in the pipeline, the OnePlus 12 is estimated to be at least two quarters away, based on the safest assumptions.
