This ethical and repairable design proves Bluetooth headphones can be more sustainable

WHAT IS FAIRBUDS XL

At first glance, the Fairbuds XL may seem like any other large, comfortable Bluetooth headphones with noise-cancellation features. However, their unique design enables effortless disassembly for convenient DIY repairs, positioning them among the most eco-friendly options available.

Manufactured by Fairphone, a leader in Fairtrade and repairable electronics, these headphones are priced at £219 (€249) and share the modular approach of the Fairphone 4. All Fairphone products prioritize sustainability, fair working conditions, and affordability.

HIGHLIGHTS

By unclipping the outer caps, the removable battery is exposed, reminiscent of the old days of Nokia dumbphones. The ear cushions can be easily replaced by twisting them off when they wear out. In addition to this, the headphones consist of over 80% recycled plastic, 100% recycled aluminum and tin, and 100% Fairtrade gold. Fairphone also ensures that the individuals assembling the devices receive a living wage by topping up their salaries.

Boasting good padding and a well-balanced weight, the Fairbuds XL provide comfortable extended wear. The ear cups are equipped with a slight swivel to adjust to the contours of the head, and they clamp with sufficient force to remain secure. These headphones are also splash-resistant, making them suitable for use in rainy conditions. When on-the-go, they conveniently fold down and come with a recycled nylon bag to protect them.

SPECIAL FEATURES

On the right ear cup, there is a control joystick and a noise-cancelling button. Pressing and holding the joystick for three seconds turns the headphones on and off, while a double press reveals the battery level. For playback control, press once for pause/play, left and right for track skip, or up and down for volume adjustment. The joystick is straightforward and highly functional.

ALL ABOUT BATTERY

With noise-cancelling active, the battery of the Fairbuds XL lasts up to 26 hours of listening time and can be fully charged in roughly 2.5 hours through the USB-C port, which also doubles as a wired audio input. While the headphones lack an analogue 3.5mm socket, a USB-C to 3.5mm cable is available for purchase from Fairphone for €12.95.

These headphones feature Bluetooth 5.1 with multipoint connectivity, allowing them to connect with two devices simultaneously. They support standard SBC and AAC Bluetooth audio formats, as well as Qualcomm’s high-quality aptX HD, which is commonly found on Android phones.
