Nintendo has announced that it will introduce updated versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 and several related accessories in Europe with user-replaceable batteries. The rollout of these refreshed devices will begin in phases starting this summer. The move is aimed at complying with the European Union’s new battery regulations, which will come into effect in February 2027. While the updated models will feature minor changes to battery capacity and weight, Nintendo says users can expect the same overall performance as the current versions.

Updated Nintendo Switch 2 Models to Roll Out in Phases

According to Nintendo, selected products sold across Europe will gradually be replaced with revised versions that comply with the EU Batteries Regulation 2023/1542. Under these rules, portable electronic devices must be equipped with batteries that consumers can easily replace when needed.

The rollout will begin this summer with the updated Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. The refreshed Nintendo Switch 2 console is scheduled to launch in autumn 2026, while the revised Joy-Con 2 controllers and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will arrive during the winter season.

Minor Changes to Battery Capacity and Weight

The updated Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a 5,172mAh battery, slightly smaller than the 5,200mAh battery found in the current model. Due to the redesigned battery system, the console’s weight will increase from 401g to 411g.

The refreshed Joy-Con controllers will retain the same battery capacity as the existing versions, but each controller will become approximately 2g heavier because of the replaceable battery design.

The biggest hardware change will be seen in the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, whose battery capacity will be reduced from 1,070mAh to 897mAh.

Retro Controllers Will Also Receive Updates

Nintendo has also confirmed that several of its retro controllers will receive similar hardware revisions starting in early 2027.

The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch will become slightly heavier while retaining the same battery capacity. Meanwhile, the GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 will receive a small battery upgrade, increasing its capacity from 500mAh to 525mAh.

Original Nintendo Switch to Be Phased Out in Europe

Nintendo has not announced a revised version of the original Nintendo Switch for the European market. Instead, the company plans to gradually discontinue sales of the ageing console as the updated Nintendo Switch 2 becomes more widely available across the region.

To make the transition easier, Nintendo will also offer battery replacement kits for all revised products through the Nintendo Store in Europe. However, the availability of these kits may vary depending on the country.
